Town manager reports heavy use of Hilltop Needmore community center, Fire Station No. 4 wins regional recognition; engines due soon

Town Manager reported more than 17,500 visitors to the Hilltop Needmore Town Park Community Center since Feb. 4, awards for Fire Station No. 4 from Triangle Business Journal, four new fire engines arriving, and upcoming sidewalk and waterline projects beginning in March.
Town Manager Jonathan updated the board on Feb. 18 about recent operations and capital projects, reporting strong public use of the newly opened Hilltop Needmore Town Park Community Center and several public-works milestones.
“Since the opening of the Hilltop Needmore Town Park Community Center on February 4, the center has experienced over 17,500 visitors to that facility. We've processed 543 transactions. We've distributed over a thousand memberships, and we've had over 350 people use the drop in option for racquetball, fitness, track, and the open gym,” the manager reported.
The manager also said Fire Station No. 4 was awarded the 2025 award for top state, county and municipal project by the Triangle Business Journal; staff described the station as an almost $9 million investment with a decon building and a historic room honoring a former chief. Four new fire engines were scheduled to arrive Thursday (weather permitting) and staff expect to present installment financing for the engines to the board in March.
Public-works and utilities updates included completed pretreatment of roads ahead of an anticipated winter storm, a successful waterline repair at NC 55 and Dickens Road, and waterline bids that opened under budget with a recommended award to be presented in March. Staff also held pre-construction meetings this month for the June Street sidewalk project, the Southeast Judd sidewalk project and the Downtown Verena Pedestrian Improvement Project, all of which staff said would begin construction in March.
The manager closed by reminding the board of the State of the Town address on March 3 and other upcoming events. No board action was required for the updates.
