The Brookings School Board voted to approve two school calendars covering the 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years, and trustees discussed the committee process, community surveys and a change to graduation timing.
Superintendent Dr. Schultz told the board the district used survey data from staff, students and parents to weigh trade-offs between earlier and later start dates, semester timing and the timing of holiday breaks. "That start date was between starting somewhere in the middle or a later [August start]," Schultz said, adding that the polling showed a preference for not moving the end of school too late into May.
Board members asked for committee background before the vote; Schultz described consultation with high school staff about dual-credit classes and semester balance. He said the district will continue to refine calendar practices and noted the committee aimed for consistency across years. The board approved a change to move graduation earlier than Memorial Day weekend for at least the next two years.
Trustees also discussed how calendar timing affects seniors taking college dual-credit courses, fine arts and activity schedules during holiday weeks, and administrative staffing during semester transitions. The motion to adopt the two-year calendars passed on voice vote.
