Tyler ISD officials told the board that midyear assessments show notable early-literacy gains in kindergarten and modest gains across first and second grades, and provided a midyear update on I‑Ready diagnostics and personalized learning plans.
Dr. Cassandra Choppa and Dr. Johnny DeWard, district supervisors, presented MCLASS results for kindergarten through second grade. Kindergarten students at benchmark rose from 29% at the start of the year to 56% at midyear; first grade rose from 46% to 52% and second grade from 51% to 56%. Specific early decoding measures improved: kindergarten decoding moved from 11% at benchmark to 54%, word reading from 13% to 54%, and letter sounds from 22% to 54%. For second grade, reading accuracy rose from 49% to 63% and oral reading fluency from 47% to 52%.
District staff also updated the board on I‑Ready, a diagnostic and personalized learning platform used in years K–8. The district reported that about one-third of students had already made one year’s worth of projected growth by midyear across the cohort data, and roughly half of eighth graders had reached that first-year progress marker. Presenters cautioned that I‑Ready is one of several tools the district uses; they said it does not perfectly align with Texas curriculum standards and that campuses also rely on unit assessments and accountability trackers. Board members asked for school-level breakdowns, which staff agreed to provide.
District representatives said they will continue three‑week progress monitoring for students below benchmark and use MyPath interventions and teacher-led Tier 1 instruction to push students toward stretch-growth targets. The presentation included demographic breakdowns and comparisons with other districts using I‑Ready.
