The Wayne County Board of Commissioners approved naming the roads in Phase 1 of the Wayne County Business Campus during the Feb. 18, 2025 meeting. County staff said the Wayne County Development Authority (WCDA) originally suggested the two names: Industry Avenue and Ray Mayo Way. The county acquired the property and is preparing the final plat for recording; staff said the road names must be formally approved by the county as property owner before recording.
Commissioners and staff noted the naming honors the late Commissioner Ray Mayo for his involvement with WCDA and support for industrial recruitment. The roads will be DOT roads and, according to staff, will be petitioned to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for maintenance once the plat is recorded. Staff also said restrictive covenants tying maintenance obligations to owners will follow recordation, with each owner responsible for prorated maintenance costs by acreage.
Ending: Staff said a permanent sign will be ordered and installed; the county currently bears maintenance responsibility until parcels are sold and ownership transfers to private owners or DOT assumes maintenance.
