Rushwood student leadership team showcases service projects to Nordonia Hills board

Rushwood Elementary’s student leadership team and their advisor, Renee Piper, presented at the Nordonia Hills City School Board meeting on Feb. 18 to describe service-learning projects they completed this year.
Renee Piper told the board the third- and fourth-grade leadership group meets monthly and generally includes three to four students per class; larger interests require in-class elections. Piper said the team’s mission is to promote service learning at school and in the community.
Examples the students and advisor described include creating a hallway handprint display that spells the word “kind,” partnering with the Summit Soil and Water Conservation District and a conservation firm to install a butterfly garden at Sagamore Hills Park, singing at a local senior-living residence, and a multi-year “pajama jam” fundraiser that raised more than $430 this year to buy 42 new sets of pajamas for children served by the foster-care program Dawn’s Early Light. Piper said the group plans a future food-and-essentials drive for the local emergency assistance center.
Superintendent and board members thanked the students and advisor for their work; the presentation concluded with recognition of Piper’s decade of service to the program and a note that parents and community members were present in support.
