School board approves consent agenda, 10‑month calendars and appointments; citizens field lease amendment OK'd

The School Board of Alachua County on Feb. 18 approved a slate of routine items and made one appointment to a regional transportation board.
Votes and motions included: the board adopted the meeting agenda (with action item 7 pulled) on a 4–0 vote after a motion by Dr. McNeely and second by Ms. Surdin; it approved the minutes of the Feb. 4 regular meeting on a 4–0 vote; and it approved the consent agenda on a 4–0 vote. The superintendent recommended approval and the board approved the 2025–26 traditional 10‑month calendar as presented (motion by Dr. McNeely, second by Ms. Surdin) on a 4–0 vote.
The board also approved the 2025–26 calendar for the Alachua Regional Juvenile Detention Center on a 4–0 vote after Mr. Vu thanked staff for addressing working‑condition concerns at the facility. The board approved a second amendment to the Citizens Field lease on a 4–0 vote; staff said the amendment continues the existing arrangement while the district explores other options.
On regional representation, the board appointed Ms. Surdin as its representative to the Gainesville Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization (MTPO) and appointed Dr. McNeely as the alternate. Mr. Spilius and Allison Moss of the county provided background showing the MTPO expanded membership to add a school board representative as part of a countywide apportionment plan; staff said an interlocal agreement defining roles and responsibilities is expected to return to the board in a forthcoming meeting.
Why it matters: The calendar approvals set the district schedule for 2025–26 for the majority of schools and for juvenile‑detention center students; the MTPO appointment gives the district a formal seat at long‑range, countywide transportation and pedestrian planning discussions. Approval of the Citizens Field lease amendment preserves current operations while staff considers alternatives.
