Local reef consortium seeks city partnership, funding for coral outplanting and experimental artificial reefs
Summary
A Delray-based reef restoration consortium urged the commission to back outplanting of nursery-reared corals and to explore modular artificial-reef testing; presenters requested city help with regulatory coordination and seed funding for initial outplanting work.
A volunteer consortium led by local conservation and design groups asked the Delray Beach City Commission on Feb. 18 to partner with a community-led reef-restoration effort that includes coral nursery outplanting and pilot artificial-reef testing.
Jim Chard, who organized the consortium, said the effort involves community organizations and private studios and seeks municipal support for communications, some regulatory coordination and seed funding. Chard told the commission the project has two tracks: (1) nursery propagation and outplanting of resilient corals, led locally by the Reef Institute, and (2) research and testing of modular artificial-reef structures developed by Singer Studio and partners.
