Belmont Middle student wins Gaston County spelling bee, will compete in regional contest

Paul Sayeg, a student at Belmont Middle School, won the Gaston County Schools spelling bee and will represent the district at the Carolina Panthers Regional Spelling Bee in Charlotte in March.
District officials said Sayeg emerged from a field of 38 contestants and secured the championship by correctly spelling "taxonomic," earning the opportunity to advance to the regional competition. The top four finishers in the regional contest are eligible to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Nixon Sipe of Cramerton Middle School finished as the district runner-up. The winners were recognized during the Gaston County Board of Education meeting on Feb. 17 and invited forward for photographs.
