Lawrence accepts $35,000 fire-safety grant to replace turnout gear

The Lawrence City Council voted Feb. 18 to accept a $35,000 safety grant from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services to replace turnout gear for the city’s fire department.
Captain Delaney, filling in for Chief Brian Moriarty, told the council the grant “should allow us about 15 to 20 sets and this encompasses our boots, our pants, our coats, our helmets, our structural firefighting gear.” The department said the equipment purchase will replenish structural firefighting ensembles needed for operations.
Councilors voted to accept the grant and appropriate the funds; the clerk called the roll and members present voted in favor. The council did not attach conditions to the grant acceptance during the meeting. The department indicated similar grants have been sought in past years and that the money will be used specifically for turnout ensemble replacement.
The council’s acceptance allows the fire department to proceed with procurement consistent with state grant rules and city purchasing procedures.
