Commission approves Jan. minutes; staff reports on speed cushions and unfunded signals list

The commission opened the Feb. 17 meeting with roll call and a motion to approve the Jan. 24 meeting minutes; the motion, moved by Commissioner Varnell and seconded by Commissioner Littlefield, passed unanimously (7 in favor).
Staff presented the regular monthly Traffic Services Division report. Staff said 35 speed cushions have been installed under the ASAP program to date, along with four driver speed feedback signs and six street alerts. Staff also reported routine administrative work on yield signs, parking controls and turn restrictions. One additional signal was added to the unfunded approved signals list: the intersection of Mustang Road and NW 6th Street.
Commissioners asked about program finances. Staff confirmed a one-time startup allocation of about $50,000 was largely spent and that a $95,000 allocation from council is now in use; staff said detailed running balances are no longer tracked monthly because they provided limited additional value for ongoing operations.
Commissioners also referenced the Vision Zero presentation (previous meeting) and encouraged continued coordination on the city’s goal to reduce traffic deaths; staff and commissioners noted planned streetscape and safety improvements discussed later in the agenda.
