Arts Commission hears February event updates, museum exhibits and upcoming visits

Commission members on Feb. 17 used the commission meeting to report local arts programming, exhibitions and upcoming visits across Oklahoma City.
Commissioner Ontiveros delivered a permission advocate report listing events in February: an African American Inventors Exhibit curated by librarian Philip Tolbert at the Ralph Ellison Library with a scavenger hunt through February; “Explore the Code,” an exhibit on bootmaker Willie Lusk Jr. at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum running through Feb. 28; Oklahoma City University’s Black History Month Visual and Performing Arts Expo on Feb. 8; Art with a Heart OKC on Feb. 15, a philanthropic auction benefiting local children’s organizations that featured young artists receiving treatment at the Jimmy Everest Center; and Metro Tech’s Black History Month celebration “In Living Color” on Feb. 27 at the MetroTech District Center.
Commissioners also noted other items: Commissioner Eichman will be honored by Oklahoma Contemporary at its Celebrate Founders Day event on April 17; an Edgar Heap of Birds exhibit opens at Oklahoma Contemporary this week and will include a related basketball court installation at Campbell Art Park (the court likely will be completed later than the exhibit opening); the Oklahoma City Museum of Art is marking its 80th anniversary with a “From the Vault” exhibition of works not shown in recent years; and a cooperative agreement between the museum and the convention center has already resulted in one work by Ernesto Sanchez being hung at the convention center.
Commissioners announced that the Institute of American Indian Arts will visit FAM on March 27 and that Evites will be sent to commissioners. Staff also noted that the Betty Price Gallery at the State Capitol will reopen next Tuesday at 4 p.m. The chair reminded members that the next Arts Commission meeting is scheduled for March 17 at 4 p.m., and then adjourned the Feb. 17 meeting.
