Leila Badgewell of ABATE of Oklahoma asked the City Council during citizen comments to place motorcycle safety signs at locations across Broken Arrow, citing crash statistics and prior deployments of similar signs in Tulsa.
“We have also talked to... Captain McCoy and Hurst about, where they would like these signs put statistically all over Broken Arrow,” Badgewell said, noting the organization has obtained signs and will reveal two new installations near a dealership on Peoria. Badgewell said ABATE and other motorcycle organizations can fund initial sign purchases if needed and that the group performs fundraising for such efforts.
City Manager Mister Spurgeon told Badgewell the city’s process routes signage requests through a traffic safety committee that includes the police department, the streets department and engineering staff. He asked staff to review ABATE’s recommendations and report back to council. Assistant City Manager Kenny Schwab, who coordinates those reviews, said the traffic safety committee typically meets and can produce a recommendation within about a month; Spurgeon projected an update could be available in March.
Badgewell offered a historical cost estimate for similar signs (about $215.16 in 2015) and said ABATE members would be willing to contribute to initial purchases; staff said the city could maintain signs after initial installation if council supported that approach.
No formal council vote was required; the city directed staff to evaluate the sign requests through normal traffic safety committee procedures and to report back to council.
