Selectmen discuss Veterans Park cleanup, possible disc-golf course; town readies June Civil War reenactment

Selectmen discussed potential new uses and cleanup of Veterans Park and other town open spaces at the Feb. 11 meeting, including a resident-proposed disc-golf course that would be designed and largely funded by a volunteer group.

A board member said the disc-golf designers provide plans free of charge and raise funds to purchase equipment; town staff or volunteers might occasionally help with clearing or brushing. The parks liaison noted there may be alternative locations and asked that the topic be placed on a future agenda so proponents can present designs.

Board members said they will request that Sean (department staff) bring a draft plan showing the DCR (Department of Conservation and Recreation) easement and how it intersects Veterans Park at the next meeting so the board can assess available space.

Selectmen also reported that Daniel's Farm is planning to bring back a Civil War reenactment in June, with activities including a mobile army hospital demonstration and camping overnight; Southwick Zoo has donated two cords of wood for the event. Parks and Recreation and the fire department are coordinating with organizers.

Other community notices included the library’s grant news, the Chamber of Commerce legislative breakfast and a seed swap organized by the garden club. The town reminded residents that nomination papers for the upcoming election are due Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Board members encouraged resident volunteers to help clean underused town fields and said more public outreach will be scheduled when DCR and Parks have draft plans.
