Commission adopts regional hazard mitigation plan covering Burke and neighboring counties

Robert Bishop, the county fire marshal, asked the board on Feb. 17 to adopt the region’s Uniform Hazard Mitigation Plan (UHMP). Bishop said the UHMP is reviewed and updated every five years and covers Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and other jurisdictions; the plan encompasses up to 28 municipalities across the cooperating counties and seven municipalities in Burke County specifically.
The board adopted resolution 2025‑05 to approve the UHMP for Burke County. Commissioners voted 5–0 to adopt the plan. Bishop said adoption allows the county to remain eligible for certain federal hazard mitigation funding and ensures local projects are aligned with regional hazard mitigation priorities.
The board accepted the plan and asked staff to coordinate any local mitigation projects with the regional plan and funding timelines.
