House debate on changing auditor selection adjourned after extended exchanges

Representative Jordan, sponsor of House Bill 34-30, said the bill would give the governor the power to appoint the state auditor with the advice and consent of the Senate, replacing selection by the State Fiscal Accountability Authority.

The proposal drew extended questioning and pushback from members who raised concerns about whether similar changes should cover other fiscal officers. Representative Cobb Hunter asked to adjourn debate and the House approved the motion, leaving the bill without a final vote.

The measure, Jordan said on the House floor, is intended to remove a potential conflict in the current system, where the State Fiscal Accountability Authority — which includes the treasurer and comptroller — selects the auditor and could later be audited by that same office. "This legislation would change the selection process of the auditor," Jordan said during his explanation.

Representative Cobb Hunter said she wanted more time to consider expanding the change to other officials such as the treasurer and controller general and moved to adjourn debate. Other members spoke about the policy trade-offs: some argued for fuller transparency and accountability through gubernatorial appointment, while others noted that constitutional officers are elected statewide and that the offices differ in legal status and function.

After debate, Cobb Hunter’s motion to adjourn debate carried. The House did not take a final vote on the bill; the matter remains pending at the point debate was adjourned.
