Subcommittee advances bill to increase penalty for driving without a license

Sponsor Leader Lambert explained the bill would align penalties for driving while suspended or revoked with existing penalties for the underlying driving offense. Under the bill, failing to produce a physical driver’s license when one holds a valid license would remain a Class C misdemeanor; other unlicensed driving offenses would be upgraded to a Class B misdemeanor, the sponsor said.
Committee members called the previous question and the clerk reported the vote tally at 6 ayes and 2 noes. The bill passed and will proceed to the full Transportation Committee.
The motion to advance the bill carried without further recorded amendments or conditions, and the clerk officially recorded the committee’s tally.
