Committee hears two gubernatorial appointments to outfitters and parks boards; no votes taken

Two gubernatorial appointees appeared before the Senate Resources & Environment Committee for introductory hearings but were not voted on at the meeting.

Lonnie Allen, an outfitter who lives in East Idaho and serves as mayor of Warm River, introduced himself as a long-time industry participant and described his outfitting business and partnerships with conservation nonprofits. Allen said he has been an outfitter since 1987 and that licensing helps “protect the, non or the guided public” by ensuring qualified guides are available in the field. Committee members asked Allen routine questions about his background; no committee vote was taken and the senator presiding said the appointment would be voted on at the next meeting.

Jim (Jim) Keating of Hailey, Idaho, introduced himself as a nominee for the Parks and Recreation Board. Keating described 13 years running the Blaine County Recreation District and current service as city administrator of Sun Valley. He said his priorities include treating parks “like a business” while honoring affordability and public access. Keating answered committee questions about managing demand at popular parks and pointed to considerations including federal funding constraints and reservation-system options. Keating’s appointment likewise was not voted on; the chair said the committee would vote at the next meeting and the nominee would then go to the floor.

Both nominees responded to questions from committee members but did not receive a confirmation vote at this meeting; the transcript records committee discussion and questions but not formal action on either nomination.
