Roads crew reports ongoing winter damage; resident urges chip-and-seal for rural lane

Highway staff reported Feb. 17 that repeated freeze-thaw cycles and recent storms are causing sections of county roads to deteriorate and that crews have been plowing, patching and doing bridge maintenance.
The highway office said bid packets for asphalt, fuel and stone opened on Feb. 17 and that bids are due March 17. Staff said they have contacted local and regional asphalt, pipe and stone suppliers and will forward bid materials to the county reviewer.
A resident, identified in the meeting as Dr. Tao, described a roughly three-quarter-mile stretch from 400 South to the Ripley County line and urged the commission to consider a chip-and-seal treatment to reduce recurring gravel and mud issues on the road. The resident said the road’s current condition has caused repeated maintenance and plow difficulties.
Commissioners asked staff to evaluate the road for inclusion in the county’s 2025 chip-and-seal program and to confirm available funding; staff said limited county funds and existing project lists will determine whether the road can be scheduled. Staff also noted that cost-share programs for homeowner groups have been used in other parts of the county.
