Decatur County adopts Safe Streets resolution to join State Road 3 safety study

The Decatur County Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 17 to adopt a resolution committing the county to a zero-traffic-fatality goal so it can join a Safe Streets for All study of State Road 3.
County staff and partners described the program as a federally funded study covering State Road 3 from U.S. 70 to U.S. 74; Rush County and other regional partners are leading the application. Commissioners were told Decatur County’s portion of implementation and plan development is expected to be approximately $30,000–$35,000.
The resolution as presented emphasizes county collaboration with residents, local and regional governments and state agencies to identify and address safety issues on the corridor. Staff said the study’s purpose is to document safety problems and produce a safety action plan that could be used to request state-level project funding.
Commission discussion focused on the county’s expected financial share, the benefits for traffic flow and heavy-truck routing, and the administrative requirement to adopt the resolution before the county can be listed as a partner on the study.
