Pathways Homeless Shelter presents 2024 impact report; says state contract runs through June 2025

YANKTON — Pathways Homeless Shelter representatives briefed the commission about program changes and handed out the shelter’s 2024 impact report, highlighting employment outcomes and case-management work they said improve housing placement prospects.
Will Kennedy, who identified himself as representing Pathways, said the nonprofit released a press release outlining major program changes and planned to be on a future agenda for a fuller presentation. "We're a stand alone entity that gets funding from the state. This is what we have found is going to need to happen to keep Pathway sustainable," Kennedy said.
Operations Director Alexis Evans described services staff provide, including case management, help enrolling clients in Medicaid and SNAP and other resources. Evans said Pathways’ reentry program keeps new enrollees on board for two weeks and that participants "end up being 80% employed," a statistic the shelter highlighted as a success.
Kennedy told commissioners the shelter has a current contract with the state that runs through June 2025 and that negotiations for the next contract will begin in June. He asked county stakeholders for feedback as Pathways adjusts programming.
The presenters offered to make the report available on the shelter’s website and to respond to follow-up questions from commissioners or other stakeholders.
