DOT schedules Highway 20 railroad-crossing reconstruction; full closure projected May 19–July 20

Jason (staff member) presented a handout summarizing the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s schedule for reconstruction of the railroad crossing on Highway 20. Staff told trustees the timeline shows lane closures in April and May with a projected full closure from May 19 through July 20 to complete reconstruction; the completion date on paper is July 20 but staff said the state hopes the actual closure will be shorter.
Trustees asked about detour routes and truck traffic impacts. Jason said staff had not yet received a final detour plan from the DOT but would ask DOT for details and share detour maps and portable-message‑board timing once available. He also said the project will replace tracks, trolley wire, warning devices and the signal underground work and that the state’s order outlined four gates and overhead warning devices.
Trustees expressed concern about the closure coinciding with events on the village square and about increased truck traffic on alternate routes such as Burns or Bowers; staff said they would share DOT detour plans when delivered and coordinate public notice. The board thanked staff for coordinating with the railroad, contractors and the state.
