Cherokee County school board accepts John Harmon’s resignation; opens application to fill District 3 seat

The Cherokee County School District Board unanimously accepted the resignation of District 3 board member John Harmon during its Jan. 16 meeting after the board attorney read a letter stating he would be moving outside the district.
In a letter read aloud by board attorney and parliamentarian Abby Roach, Harmon wrote, “I’m writing this letter to inform you of my resignation for my position as school board member, effective immediately. I’ve sold my home and I will be moving.” The board voted to accept the resignation without opposition.
The board’s attorney told members the vacancy falls less than one year before the next general election, so under Georgia law the board may appoint a qualified resident to fill the unexpired term. The board announced a timeline: the district will post the application on its website the day after the meeting, the application window will close Jan. 31, and the board will vote on an appointment at its Feb. 13 meeting. Harmon’s unexpired term runs through Dec. 31, 2026.
Board members and staff thanked Harmon for 10 years of service at the meeting’s earlier recognitions. Harmon told the board he was resigning because of an impending move outside his post.
The board did not name candidates at the meeting. The district’s public notice will govern how to apply and the deadline; the board attorney said the new appointee must reside in District 3 and otherwise meet the qualifications for office.
