The Gwinnett County Board of Education authorized the superintendent on Jan. 16 to purchase 16.1 acres at 250 Gwinnett Drive in Lawrenceville for $7,000,000 from Central Baptist Church, providing the district with centrally located land for future development.
The motion to authorize the purchase was made by Steven Knudson and seconded; the measure passed with three board members voting in favor and two opposed.
Board discussion centered on competing priorities. Supporters stressed that centrally located land is scarce and that the district obtained the parcel at a price described as materially below appraised value; they framed the acquisition as a strategic, long-term investment to accommodate future programs and growth. Opponents said the district should first complete a capital investment plan and address outstanding repairs and equity needs at existing schools before committing SPLOST-era funds to land acquisition.
Deputy Superintendent Walt Martin confirmed that any future large construction or renovation projects using the parcel would return to the board for approval: "Anytime we have a large construction project or renovation project, particularly anything over a million dollars, always comes to the board," he said.
Details in the motion specified the purchase price ($7,000,000), seller (Central Baptist Church), property size (16.1 acres) and street address (250 Gwinnett Drive, Lawrenceville). Board members suggested possible future uses including career/technical (CTAE) programming and other district facilities; they also referenced SPLOST 7 as a future funding source for projects on the site.
Vote and next steps The motion passed 3-2. If the district proceeds with development, any major construction project would be brought back to the board for review and approval and would likely be considered in the next SPLOST planning cycle.
Why it matters: The purchase gives Gwinnett County Public Schools centrally located land in a part of the county where future facility options are limited, but it also raised questions about timing and the district's current facility maintenance priorities.
Members who spoke about the purchase included the motion maker Steven Knudson, Deputy Superintendent Walt Martin, Superintendent Dr. Watts and several trustees who asked for a district capital investment plan prior to further large spending.
