Kentwood streamlines building-permit fee schedule, moves to two-tier system

Kentwood commissioners voted Feb. 4 to amend the fees and charges relating to commercial and industrial building permits, replacing a three-tier fee schedule with a two-tier system.
Staff explained the new structure will set one tier for projects valued between $1,001 and $15,000,000 and a second tier for projects over $15,000,000. The change is intended to offset building inspection department costs across permit categories so trade permits (electrical, mechanical, plumbing) can remain lower and encourage compliance.
Staff said the amendment mirrors approaches used by neighboring cities and was developed to make permit pricing more consistent and administratively simpler. The commission approved the amendment on a roll-call vote.
Art moved approval; motion supported by Moore. The clerk recorded votes in favor.
