Commission OKs engineering contract for Breton Avenue intersection and bridge inspection

The Kentwood City Commission authorized the mayor to enter a contract with Prine and Neuhoff for design and construction engineering services related to the intersection improvements at 50 Second Street and Bridal Avenue and construction inspection for the Breton Avenue bridge over the Paul Henry Trail.
Staff said the contract not to exceed $151,910 (including a 10% contingency) will be funded from the Fiscal Year 2025 and 2026 major street fund and is part of the city’s tax increment financing (TIF) project discussions. The contract covers intersection design where right-turn lanes and traffic-signal improvements are anticipated and construction administration/inspection work for the three-sided box structure that will form the bridge over the trail.
Jim Firkwood (project staff) explained Prine and Neuhof submitted the low bid amid proposals ranging up to about $280,000. He clarified the scope: design services focus on the intersection while construction administration/inspection includes the bridge portion; separate design for additional Breton frontage likely will be bid later and performed by the firm that designs those segments.
Commissioners asked whether the approved contract includes actual bridge construction; staff confirmed it covers design and construction engineering (inspection/administration) only, and that construction would be bid later depending on TIF decisions and developer participation.
Art moved approval; Morgan seconded. The motion passed on voice vote.
