Planning commission discusses 2025 work plan, keeps North Downtown sub-area plan as placeholder

Holland City Planning Commission members discussed a proposed 2025 work plan at their Feb. 11, 2025 meeting, when staff outlined nine priority items—eight drawn directly from the city master plan and a ninth focused on corridor planning.
City planner Steve said the list is intended to identify items the commission can make measurable progress on in 2025, and described the North Downtown Sixth Street sub-area plan as a placeholder tied to the Waterfront Holland effort. “There’s 9 different items 8 of those are right off of the the sheet from the master plan action items the ninth item is again from the master plan but it's in the corridor planning,” Steve said. He added that the commission had left the North Downtown item on the list so the city would be ready to act if Waterfront Holland moves forward.
The commission discussed other work-plan items staff flagged, including possible wayfinding related to a planned ice rink downtown and exploring electrical connections to support pop-up businesses such as food trucks and events. Steve said the electrical-connections idea would likely involve coordination with the Downtown Development Authority and business improvement districts to identify strategic locations.
One commissioner reported that the commission has been asked to participate in a regional industry-cluster analysis for food processing. “We have been asked to participate in a industry cluster analysis for food processing with the West Michigan Shoreline Grama and they are looking at Lake, Muskegon, Mason, Newaygo and Oceana Counties looking at the food processing cluster and they have asked Ottawa to be part of it,” the commissioner said, noting the project is funded by an Economic Development Administration grant.
Members noted that many master-plan action items are ongoing and that the work plan is intended to be a focused subset of initiatives the commission can advance within a year. Commissioners told staff the proposed list “looks good,” but the transcript does not record a formal motion or vote approving the work plan during the meeting.
Staff also reminded the commission about upcoming related meetings, including a South Washington open house and a joint meeting later in the month.
