South Lyon council adopts higher parking fines, including handicap penalty increase

The South Lyon City Council on Feb. 10 approved the second reading of an ordinance raising several parking fines, including increasing the fine for handicap parking violations from $100 to $125.
The ordinance amendment raises other parking violation fines from $10 to $25 if paid within seven days, and from $10 to $30 if paid after seven days; handicap fines would rise to $150 if paid after seven days. The council voted by roll call to adopt the change after staff presented comparative fines from nearby communities including Wixom, Novi, Milford and Brighton.
Council member Delk moved to approve the second reading of the amendment to Chapter 90, Article 3, Section 9-72; Council member Kurzweil seconded. The city clerk recorded affirmative votes from Kurzweil, Hipple, Dilg, Ogert, Hansen, Kennedy and others, and the motion carried.
City staff said the change was made to align South Lyon’s fines with peer communities and to adjust penalties to encourage prompt payment. The ordinance as adopted replaces the existing language in Chapter 90, Article 3, Section 9-72 (fines and costs). No changes to enforcement procedures were presented at the meeting.
The ordinance takes effect according to the schedule in the amended text attached to the council packet; the city clerk led the roll-call vote on the second reading.
