Norwin highlights student awards, spring arts and alumni events at Feb. 17 meeting

Doctor McCracken read the Excellence in Academics report, recognizing Avery Wazzo for a first-place finish in the district SkillsUSA early childhood education presentation; McCracken said Wazzo will advance to the Pennsylvania State SkillsUSA conference in April with a chance to advance to nationals in June. McCracken also recognized students who attended Model UN at American University and singled out individuals and teams honored for diplomacy awards and a mock-trial prosecution-team win over Derry High School at the Westmoreland County Courthouse.
Administrators described a spring partnership with the Pittsburgh Pirates in which more than 90 high school students will work on a marketing campaign to sell tickets for Norwin Nights at PNC Park; two student teams were challenged to sell 1,000 tickets to support the district’s A+ facilities capital campaign, the presentation said.
The Norwin Theatre Company announced its spring musical, High School Musical, with evening performances March 20–22 at 7 p.m. and a matinee March 23 at 2 p.m.; the production will feature a cast and crew of 86 students and is directed by Lauren Shire, Aaron Schrader and Todd Latey (as named in the presentation). Tickets are available on the Norwin Theatre Company website, the presenter said.
Athletics highlights included Norwin boys wrestling qualifying for PIAA state championships and several individual and team successes across wrestling, basketball and swimming. The presentation noted swimmer Tyler Turgeon set a Norwin pool record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time reported as 51.33 seconds; Amber Klingensmith was also credited with a pool record in the 100 backstroke at 58.44 seconds.
Student representative Preston Montag reviewed student activities, including a planned combined Bel Canto and Select Orchestra performance trip to Washington, D.C., with community send-off concert March 26 and departure March 27, a senior-citizens dinner planned for March 2, and winter track successes at several invitational meets.
No public comments on agenda items were registered for the meeting; the board proceeded to minutes and the consent agenda.
