The Detroit City Council unanimously approved a resolution recognizing Feb. 7 as Jay Dilla Day in the city of Detroit.
Council President Mary Sheffield introduced the resolution and invited family members of the late producer James DeWitt Yancey, known professionally as Jay Dilla, to speak. Jamiyah Yancey, one of his daughters, thanked the council for recognizing her father’s legacy and noted that community events and a street unveiling were scheduled this week. “Words cannot describe how grateful we are for this declaration,” Jamiyah Yancey said.
Joylette Hunter, identified in the meeting as a spokesperson for the James DeWitt Yancey estate, also thanked the council and described the estate’s work to preserve Dilla’s musical legacy.
Council remarks cited Dilla’s role as a founding member of Slum Village and listed institutions and events that have honored his work, including music programming at local cultural institutions and festivals.
Council action: A motion to approve the resolution was made and, hearing no objection, the presiding officer declared the resolution approved and granted a waiver where requested.
What’s next: Family members said a street-naming event approved earlier by the council would take place on Thursday and that the family had events planned for the weekend to mark the recognition.
