Council members directed staff to convert a proposed social media policy for elected officials into an ordinance and bring it forward for first reading at the next regular meeting.
Councilman Michael introduced the draft policy and said it is concise and focuses on distinguishing personal posts from official-capacity posts. "I like this because it's very simple. Basically, all you have to do is state that you're on the official capacity business official business or this is my personal feeling," he said.
City staff counsel recommended placing the rule in the municipal code's ethics section as an ordinance rather than in the personnel policy. "I think the best place to put this if it were to get adopted would be an ordinance in the ethics section of the municipal code...create official city council accounts for them and that's separate from their personal account," said Mister Hutto, a city staff member. He said staff could draft an ordinance for review and either present it for vote at the next meeting or in March.
Council members asked staff to prepare the ordinance language and confirmed the item will be placed on the next meeting agenda for first reading.
