Senator introduces bill to make HVAC extended warranties transferable, eliminate registration requirement

Senator Dixon told the Senate Rules Committee on Feb. 13, 2025, that Senate Bill 112 would require that extended warranties for residential HVAC systems remain effective without separate consumer registration and be transferable with the system when a home is sold.
"This has to do with HVAC systems," Senator Dixon said. "When you purchase extended warranties currently, you have to register that item. This would do away with that, having to register the item because the manufacturer already has your information." He added that the bill would ensure transferability so the warranty "runs with the system" through multiple sales within a warranty period.
A committee member raised a question about manufacturer certification for installers and how consumers would verify certification if registration were removed. In response, Dixon said the bill "clarifies in there that it must be installed by a licensed contractor," and that the warranty would start on the installation date. The transcript records a committee member noting some manufacturers require certified installers for certain products and asking how the bill would address that certification; Dixon said he would "look into that."
