Dare County Early College opens application cycle for current eighth graders; district plans 50‑student inaugural cohort

Fallon (presenting) said the state approved the early college application and that all Dare County eighth graders — public, private or homeschooled — may apply. The district will hold teacher briefings, student classroom presentations and parent meetings across the county in mid‑ to late January before opening an online application Feb. 1–Mar. 4.
Fallon explained the selection steps: students complete a brief online application, submit basic demographic information and short interest questions, and then attend an interview in the week of March 13; the district will provide interview questions in advance so applicants can prepare. She said the district aims to admit and notify applicants around March 14 with a commitment day in early April and a May meet‑and‑greet on the COA campus.
"For this particular group, because we are transitioning and don't have the building yet on the COA campus, I think we're looking to enroll about 50 students to start with," Fallon said.
Fallon listed scheduled information session dates for eighth graders and parents at the county's middle schools between Jan. 15 and Jan. 29 and said principals and teachers will help identify students for teacher recommendations that accompany applications. Board members asked procedural questions about times and logistics; Fallon said she is coordinating with principals to schedule classroom visits.
