Martin County families attend ‘Kindergarten Blastoff’ orientation

Hundreds of families visited the Martin County School District on Feb. 11 for a “Kindergarten Blastoff” orientation designed to introduce rising kindergartners and their caregivers to school routines, staff and programs.

Organizers led families on tours of classrooms, the veil center, the cafeteria and the car line, introduced the district mascot and highlighted extracurricular clubs and programs. A staff member said the event’s purpose was to show families “what makes our schools amazing.”

The night included staff introductions to extended-day personnel: “And then way in the back is mister David and miss Angelina. They're our extended day, manager and assistant manager. They work miracles after school,” a staff member said. Staff also emphasized at-home preparation for kindergarten, advising caregivers to read to children and talk with them daily: “Really, the biggest thing we can tell you is just to spend time with your child and talk to them and read to them a little bit every day. That's the biggest thing you can do to to have kindergarten readiness,” another staff member said.

Families and children were given hands-on opportunities to explore learning spaces and ask staff questions. One attendee described the evening as “a great event,” and the program closed with a celebratory chant: “3, 2, 1. Blastoff.”

The district said the event offered a preview of the first day of school and aimed to increase student comfort with school routines. Organizers noted that the evening included distribution of backpacks and other materials for attendees. The event referenced the “class of 2,038” during closing remarks; the transcript does not clarify whether that figure denotes a graduation cohort or is celebratory language.

The orientation was presented as an information and engagement event; no formal actions, votes or policy decisions were recorded during the session.
