Board approves demolition and parking work at Fourth Street properties and seeks bids for high school fire alarm/intercom upgrade

District staff described three related campus projects: (A–C) demolition of a purchased house near Shaffer Stadium to level the site and add roughly 30 parking spaces and a redesigned, lighted entrance; controlled burns coordinated with the city fire department on four Fourth Street houses followed by removal of basements and foundations by district grounds staff; and purchase of benches and bleachers for tennis courts funded by a Friends of Matumas Park donation (presented cost: $27,144.80). Board members discussed visibility of the proposed entry archway and placement of ticket windows; staff said final design will return to the board for approval.
Separately, the board tentatively approved plans, specifications and an engineer's estimate and authorized public notice seeking competitive bids for the Ottumwa High School fire alarm and intercom project. Staff said the work will bring the system up to code and integrate a new intercom system; bids were to be posted and due in early February with a board review of bids planned for the Feb. 10 meeting.
On the Fourth Street demolition and Shaffer entrance items, board members approved a single motion covering items A through C after discussion; staff said the districts will coordinate a controlled burn with the local fire department to reduce demolition cost and will remove remaining foundations.
Board materials indicate the demolition approvals are preliminary site-authority votes; staff said the board will receive final design documents and costs before construction contracts are let. The fire alarm/intercom item will move to formal contractor bidding with a public bid schedule presented in board materials.
