Smith said the housing authority has completed installation of 261 exterior doors and is finalizing a security-camera project that, with city cooperation, will allow the police chief to view camera feeds from the police office. He said the authority is buying 500 smoke detectors to meet new U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requirements that call for detectors in each bedroom and outside bedrooms.
On the expected lifespan and type of detectors, Smith said the new detectors are rated for 10 years but noted that, in practice, they may last about eight years. He added that the new units are designed so homeowners cannot remove the batteries, and that failure to maintain working detectors can create liability for landlords under state rules.
Smith said he holds meetings with Fair Housing and HUD every 30 days and invited anyone who wanted more detail to contact him directly.
