Martin County hosts 'Kindergarten Blast Off' orientation for rising students

Martin County School District held a "Kindergarten Blast Off" orientation on Feb. 11 that drew hundreds of families to preview classrooms, meet staff and learn simple readiness tips organizers said.

An event narrator said, "Blast Off. That's right. They're blasting off into kindergarten," opening the program and describing the turnout. Families toured classrooms, the media center, the cafeteria and the car line, met the school mascot and learned about clubs and extended-day options.

Why it mattered: District staff said the event aimed to reduce uncertainty for children and parents before the first day of school and to highlight supports available at school sites. Speakers emphasized hands-on learning and daily family engagement as key preparation strategies.

During the event a staff member described classroom instruction, saying, "We have a lot of hands on learning. We really believe thoroughly in student engagement. It's a great way for students to learn." The same staff member advised families on preparing children for kindergarten: "Really, the biggest thing we can tell you is just to spend time with your child and talk to them and read to them a little bit every day. That's the biggest thing you can do to to have kindergarten readiness."

Parents and children moved through stations that showcased programs and services, and one parent noted their child was excited to meet classmates and enter classrooms. Organizers identified two employees, David and Angelina, as the extended-day manager and assistant manager who oversee after-school programming.

Event organizers also distributed backpacks and other materials to attendees. An event narrator closed the program by saying, "And just like that, the class of 2,038 is ready to launch into kindergarten. 3, 2, 1. Blastoff." The phrase "class of 2,038" was used in the program; organizers did not clarify the intended formatting or year of the notation during the recorded remarks.

No formal actions or policy decisions were recorded during this orientation; the session consisted of informational presentations, tours and public interaction with staff and families.

Organizers encouraged continuing family engagement and reading at home as the primary steps families can take before the first day of school.
