Resort Street business owner presses council to address parking and storage violations

During public comment on Feb. 11, a Resort Street business owner who identified herself as the building owner told the Baker City council that parked and stored vehicles at a neighboring residence have made it hazardous for customers, including elderly clients, to enter and exit diagonal parking spaces.
The commenter said one nearby property stores seven vehicles, trailers and a pop‑up camper on the street and lawn, and that some vehicles have been in place for years. She asked the council to enforce parking and nuisance codes, and to consider changing the diagonal parking configuration that she and others said makes entry and exit difficult for older customers.
Council members and staff responded that the city’s code enforcement and police have previously contacted the resident. One staff speaker explained the standard process: tagging an inoperable vehicle gives the owner a 10‑day period to move it before the city restarts enforcement actions; staff said some residents use that cycle to temporarily move vehicles and then return them, complicating long‑term enforcement.
Councilors said they will follow up with code enforcement and the police chief to determine whether different parking rules, time restrictions or residential permits would help. One councilor noted that prior votes had chosen diagonal parking years earlier and that changes would require council action. The council encouraged staff to “dig deeper” into the specific Resort Street property and report back.
