Planning Commission approves on‑sale beer and wine for Suzuki Sushi and Steakhouse

The Rapid City Planning Commission on Feb. 6 approved a conditional use permit allowing the restaurant Suzuki Sushi and Steakhouse to serve beer and wine on its East North Street premises, subject to the stipulations in the staff report.

A staff presenter told commissioners the establishment occupies an existing building on East North Street and will offer beer and wine served by staff from coolers at the service station. Staff said parking meets requirements and that the applicant has refaced existing signage; no new signage was proposed. The item had been continued from the previous planning commission meeting because required public notice signage had not yet been posted; staff confirmed the signage was posted and public notification requirements were met.

Staff noted the nearest property with residential zoning lies about 225 feet northwest of the restaurant and that an adjacent property across Pine Street is zoned general commercial but appears developed with multiple single‑family dwellings. The presenter emphasized the operator will need to obtain the appropriate on‑sale liquor license from the city council before serving alcohol, in accordance with city licensing procedures.

Commissioner Mike Gollaher moved to approve the conditional use permit with staff stipulations; Commissioner Vince seconded. The commission approved the motion by voice vote and recorded no public opposition in the meeting transcript.

The action was taken on the consent calendar as part of items 1–3 and will be forwarded as a recommendation to city council, which holds final authority on liquor licensing.
