Sheriff staff report meetings with federal delegation, discuss immigration enforcement and grant issues

Undersheriff Laswell and county law enforcement staff reported to the commission that they attended the National Sheriffs Conference in Washington, D.C., and met with members of the county's federal delegation, including Senators Moran and Marshall and Representative Davids; they also said they met with border patrol and ICE enforcement officials to better understand federal priorities.
The sheriff's presenter said most grant issues the office took to the delegation were resolved favorably and the county had not lost grant funding. The presenter also said they had been monitoring proposed state legislation that might impose new requirements on sheriff's offices; the state association had pushed back and the proposed legislation was withdrawn. The presenter warned the commission that some parts of the proposed state legislation were "unsavory" and said the association would follow up with meetings to clarify the implications.
On immigration enforcement, the sheriff's presenter said the county currently holds a small number of jail detainees subject to ICE detainers, and that those detainers were initiated by ICE rather than by local law enforcement. The presenter said the office will continue to monitor federal and state developments and keep the commission informed.
The commission thanked the sheriff's office for maintaining contacts in Washington and encouraged continued communication with the federal delegation.
