Finney County commissioners approved a declaration of local emergency on Jan. 27 after a wildland fire burned roughly 300 acres in the Kincannon Wildlife Area.
County Emergency Manager Paul R. S. Lake told the board a hay truck reportedly caught fire, spilling burning bales into a roadside ditch and igniting dry grass in the wildlife area. Responders included county public works (water tankers), cooperative equipment operators and other local resources; Lake said no dwellings were damaged. Weather, low humidity and wind shifts made suppression urgent and raised concerns that the fire could have traveled farther into open pasture if not contained.
Chairman asked for a motion to approve a declaration recognizing a local emergency; commissioners moved and seconded the motion and voted to approve. The board authorized staff to finalize and bring a formal resolution for signature at the Feb. 3 meeting, and the declaration remains in effect to facilitate potential state or federal assistance and to support response and recovery actions.
What it does: The declaration triggers emergency-management authorities to render aid and pursue state and federal assistance; county staff will prepare the final resolution and present it for signature at the next meeting. The item is documented in the minutes and will be posted in county records.
Next steps: finalize and sign the resolution on Feb. 3; coordinate with state and federal emergency agencies for any reimbursement or assistance.
