The Wayne County Board of Commissioners approved a three‑year intergovernmental agreement with the City of Harper Woods to support the Harper Woods Community Center project. County staff said the county’s contribution under the agreement is $379,035 toward a project with a stated total cost of $22,400,035.
Hassan Shaikh, identified in the record as director of economic development, presented the project and said the community’s contribution is $521,000 and that other partners are contributing $1.5 million; he said the $1.5 million is a state grant from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. Mayor Valerie Kendall of Harper Woods told commissioners the center is intended to provide indoor recreation space that the city lacked during the COVID‑19 pandemic. Commissioners moved to approve the agreement; the motion carried.
According to the presentation, the new building will be constructed on an open field in Salter Park along Harper Avenue. The facility is described as an 8,650 square‑foot parks and community building that will include a gymnasium, locker rooms, restrooms, a parks and recreation office, storage space and two meeting rooms.
