Oconee County to host farmers’ breakfast Jan. 22 to connect students with supervised agricultural experience

A food-council representative reported at the Oconee County Agriculture Advisory Board’s Jan. 13 meeting that the county will host a farmers’ breakfast on Jan. 22 at the career center to connect agricultural education students with supervised agricultural experience (SAE) sponsors.
The board member said teachers from each high school will bring a selection of about 10 students each to the invitation-only breakfast so students can network with potential SAE sponsors. The speaker listed a lineup of 14 opportunities that will allow students to learn hands-on skills; staff were coordinating with Extension to add a 15th participant if Extension staff are available to attend.
Examples of sponsors named during the update include Jeff Blackwell (beekeeping), a 4-H representative identified as Jackson, Pat Williams with a no-till drill, the agricultural museum represented by Les McCall, and the fish hatchery. The board member said students can combine multiple short experiences to meet hour requirements rather than complete all hours with a single sponsor.
The speaker said a separate Feb. event will focus on ag tourism and will be open to the public, and the board discussed plans for a fall series on ag tourism across Oconee and surrounding areas.
