The Foundation for Abington School District elected Dr. Mowery as president for a one-year term and approved routine governance and financial items at its Jan. 21, 2025 meeting at the district Administration Building.
The actions came with no public comment; the meeting was broadcast on the district YouTube channel and closed after board business.
Board members approved the June 18, 2024 meeting minutes and accepted the treasurer's report. "We opened up the 01/01/2024 account with 89¢," Mr. Lionetti, treasurer, said, noting there was no other activity in the account for the year ending Dec. 31, 2024. The board then voted to authorize Fitzpatrick and Zirwanka to prepare and file the foundation's required annual IRS Form 990 filings.
A board member asked about the cost of having the filings prepared; a presenter said the fee is "under a thousand dollars a year," and the board clarified that the Abington School District pays that bill in full as a contribution to the foundation. The board also set the foundation's required annual meeting for Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, at 6 p.m. and recommended holding that meeting in a virtual format.
After the votes, members discussed whether to keep the foundation active or dissolve it. Board members said the cost of dissolving the foundation had been described previously as greater than the annual maintenance cost. Justin O'Donoughi, secretary of the Foundation for Abington School District, agreed to provide board members with a comparison of the costs to maintain the foundation versus the costs to dissolve and later re-establish it: "Absolutely," he said when asked to supply the figures.
Votes at a glance: the board elected Dr. Mowery president for a one-year term (voice vote; outcome: approved); approved minutes from the June 18, 2024 meeting (voice vote; outcome: approved); accepted the treasurer's report showing a year-end balance of $0.89 (voice vote; outcome: approved); authorized Fitzpatrick and Zirwanka to prepare and file the foundation's annual IRS Form 990 (voice vote; outcome: approved); and set the 2026 annual meeting for Jan. 20 at 6 p.m., to be virtual (voice vote; outcome: approved).
There were no callers for public comment. With board business concluded, the annual meeting was adjourned.
