Montcalm County approves $27,516 painting contract for remaining jail pods

The Montcalm County Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 10 to award a $27,516.36 contract to Great Lakes Painting to finish repainting metal railings, bunks and steps in the remaining jail pods.
County maintenance director Doug Gateson told commissioners the initial bid for painting four larger pods had come in at about $13,000 and that a follow-up price to cover the rest of the facility was $27,516, which would bring the grand total for all jail painting work to roughly $41,157. He said the contractor had resolved early paint and curing problems and crews were currently finishing the fourth pod under the original contract.
Gateson said the county had budgeted $50,000 for the project last summer, leaving funds available to cover the additional work. Commissioner Johnson moved to award the contract to Great Lakes Painting; the motion was supported and approved on a voice vote.
Commissioners asked only clarifying questions about scope and timing. Gateson said the contractor expected to finish the current pod the following day and that planning to continue would allow the contractor to order larger paint quantities, which could improve efficiency for the remaining work.
The board recorded no amendments to the motion. The contract award was approved by voice vote with no recorded dissents.
Montcalm County will proceed with the additional painting under the awarded contract; the maintenance department will manage execution and scheduling.
