Residents urge Jackson County commissioners for budget timeline, jail funding and transparency

At the Jan. 21 Jackson County Board of Commissioners meeting, public comment speakers asked the board to provide a timeline for the county’s 2025 budget process and to outline plans for revenue increases and jail funding.
Amy Hawkins of Pulaski Township asked when the county will release the timeline staff is developing to address the county’s budget challenges and requested detailed follow-up on revenue strategies, repairs to Wesley Street Jail, restoring funds cut from the sheriff’s department, and reducing reliance on millages for ongoing operations. Hawkins also asked what audits are being done of county infrastructure and how the county is distinguishing needs from wants in planning.
Christy Davis, who said she works from home and represents a township resident perspective, asked whether county commissioners attend township board meetings to help facilitate or advise township boards.
The board did not take questions or provide substantive answers during the public comment period; officials reminded speakers that commissioners do not debate or answer questions during that portion of the meeting. Several commissioners later noted they attend township meetings selectively and said the board’s role is to advise and assist township boards rather than run them.
