The Brevard County Commission voted 5-0 on Feb. 11 to hold a Speak Up Brevard workshop on March 3 at 5 p.m. to hear citizen ideas submitted through the program.
Commissioner Delaney, who brought the item, said the board received 77 submissions this cycle and that staff could remove items outside the board’s jurisdiction. “I just really feel passionate about giving the citizens an opportunity to get involved in our community, in our government, and in our processes,” Delaney said.
Commissioners discussed timing and whether staff could screen submissions that the board lacks authority over; county staff said they could return a list of jurisdictional exclusions in time for any of the candidate dates. Public commenters who participated in Speak Up Brevard urged commissioners to hear submissions directly; Maureen Rupp, who said she had served on three charter review commissions, asked commissioners not to let staff “veto” citizen suggestions.
Commissioner Delaney moved to hold the workshop March 3 at 5 p.m.; Commissioner Atkinson seconded and the motion passed on a 5‑0 roll call.
