Jeremiah Jones elected Cass County commission chair after multiple secret ballots

The Cass County Board of Commissioners elected Commissioner Jeremiah Jones chair after several rounds of secret-ballot voting and the withdrawal of other nominees.

The vote concluded after repeated secret ballots produced no single majority, prompting nominations to be reopened and several candidates to withdraw. Jones secured six votes on the final ballot and was declared chair.

Board members repeatedly tried and failed to change the process from secret to public voting. A motion to make the chair vote public was put to a roll-call vote and failed 5-3, leaving the board to continue with secret ballots. After further ballots and the withdrawal of some nominees, Jones won a majority and was announced elected.

Initial ballots produced split tallies: at one point the board reported two votes for Marquette, two for James Lawrence and four for Jones, and later an evenly split ballot with two votes each for Roseanne Marchetti, Jim Lawrence, Jeremiah Jones and Sam Barrera. After several rounds, Commissioner Jim Lawrence and Commissioner Sam Barrera withdrew, leaving Jones and Commissioner Roseanne Marchetti. A subsequent secret ballot produced a six-vote majority for Jeremiah Jones, who was declared chair.

The process drew comment from commissioners about efficiency and transparency. One motion to end secret ballots was seconded and debated but failed on roll call; the clerk recorded three yes votes and five no votes, preserving the secret-ballot procedure for the immediate election.

The board formally announced Commissioner Jeremiah Jones as chair and offered brief congratulations before moving to elect a vice chair.
