Superintendent outlines legislative tracking and staff morale gains

Legislation: McDowell said the state legislative session has many proposals; he is tracking about 17 bills that could directly affect Crete Public Schools. He noted the state budget shortfall (which he described as roughly $425 million) may make bills with fiscal notes difficult to pass and said he is coordinating with associations and meeting with local senators to monitor proposals.
Staff morale: The superintendent presented district survey results used to monitor staff morale and said the district’s overall score improved from 3.24 (initial measurement) to 3.79 in the most recent administration. He said one question remained below 3.0 — recognition for good work — and that staff recognition remains an area of focus.
Community events: McDowell noted the district will host the state FFA Alumni Banquet and expects more than 100 registrants for the event; he said district staff will speak and buildings will host tours. He also said the district will reintroduce ‘‘campus highlights’’ presentations to the board over the coming months so each building can share achievements.
McDowell said he monitors bills through superintendent networks and meets periodically with Senator Brandt and other legislators to convey district priorities.
