Chief of staff Jenny Beck told the board the district’s recruitment picture is generally steady compared with a year earlier, and described current openings and outreach efforts to fill positions.
Beck reported 12 certified staff resignations and three retirements so far this school year, for a total of 17 certified departures — roughly the same total as this time last year. The district has received 30 applications for posted certified positions compared with 17 at the same point last year; Beck attributed the higher applicant pool to earlier and broader advertising efforts, including local newspapers and online platforms.
Beck said the district posted openings across multiple newspapers (Omaha World‑Herald, Lincoln Journal Star, Crete News, Seward and nearby community papers) and online services (Handshake and Teach in Nebraska) and has seen more applicants as a result. Principals and directors have been conducting interviews; the district reported its first hire for a 2025–26 position during the district’s staffing adjustments.
On classified staffing (positions not requiring certification such as paraeducators, nutrition service and maintenance), Beck reported nine open positions, down from 14 at the same time last year. Of the nine openings, six are paraeducator roles (including five special‑education para positions and one EL para). Beck said classified roles tend to turn over more frequently and the district continues recruitment efforts in those areas.
Board members asked for timing and trends; Beck said most certified staff must indicate renewal by March 15 and that resignations in December, January and February are typical timing for departures. Beck said many resignations have been for personal reasons; recruitment continues and the district is monitoring whether the numbers change through February and March.
Beck emphasized the district’s active outreach and that, to date, staffing numbers remain roughly on par with last year.
