Simi Valley service clubs form citywide task force to collect gift cards for nearby wildfire victims

Donna Smith, president of the Kiwanis Club of Simi Valley, told the council that Kiwanis and several other local nonprofit organizations are forming a joint task force to collect gift cards and coordinate donations for victims of the recent wind-driven wildfires in neighboring cities.
Smith said member organizations include Kiwanis, Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, the International City of Peace Organization, the Community Council, Soroptimists, the Interfaith Community Council and local media (99.1 The Ranch), and the group is reaching out to additional partners. The task force’s plan is to collect gift cards for supermarkets, drugstores, gas stations, Home Depot/Lowe’s and restaurants so evacuees can purchase what they need most; drop-off sites would include 99.1 The Ranch and other locations across East, Central and West Simi Valley. The group also said it will coordinate with established relief agencies to avoid scams.
Councilmembers praised the idea and offered to explore ways the city could participate or provide logistical support. Councilmember Litster specifically offered to speak with the city manager about a city representative joining the effort. The group plans to publicize collection dates and drop-off locations once details are finalized.
